Physical Educator, Lane Beatty created the Sports CLUB concept in Naples, Florida in 1999.
Realizing the need for an improved Children's Summer Camp for working parents, Lane came up with the idea of allowing children the choice to choose from a number of activities throughout the day, based on 45-minute rotations. The idea was to offer children an opportunity to play and learn the rules to multiple sports and participate in fun, neighborhood games like he had played, growing up as a child in a small town in Northern Michigan. After building a successful Summer Sports Camp at Vineyards Elementary School, parents insisted that they wanted the same choices during their after school program. Hence, Sports Camp, Inc., a non-profit organization 501 (c)(3) was formed and the after school program (Sports CLUB) began in 1999 at two sites with a small group of students. The name Sports CLUB stands for Children Learning the Ultimate Balance between academics and physical activity. The program combines homework help, Lit Club, FCAT tutoring assistance and physical activities daily from 2:45-6:30 p.m. Since then, the program has flourished to include fifteen different Sports CLUB locations throughout Collier and South Lee counties, servicing over 1,000 students.
